Emergency SNAP Support: Feed South Dakota Families Through the Federal Shutdown
A Rapid Response to Hunger in Our Communities
The federal government shutdown has stopped Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits across South Dakota. The South Dakota Department of Social Services has challenged local organizations to be ready to feed the hungry because they won’t. Team Buche Cares is answering that call.
What We’re Doing
We are immediately providing $100 grocery certificates to families affected by the loss of SNAP support.
These certificates are redeemable at Buche Foods and Buche’s Gus Stop locations, helping families get the food they need while keeping local support.
Note: The Gus Stop locations are not included. Certificates are available for Paylessfoods in Mobridge, SD.
Depending on donations, this initiative will replace our Holiday Meals program for 2025 and directs every available resource to meet the most urgent need: feeding families now.
Why It Matters
Over 37,456 households in South Dakota rely on SNAP each month. Each of these households, on average, receives approximately $400 per month to help with food and household necessities. That is nearly $2.3 million less in those South Dakota communities to purchase food.
Every dollar spent in SNAP benefits generates nearly twice the local economic benefit. SNAP is a community lifeline that supports local food spending that keeps both families and small businesses thriving.
Without SNAP, children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities face immediate food insecurity.
Every $100 grocery credit you fund helps one family stay fed and keeps rural economies stable during this federal disruption.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How will the funds be used?
- 100% of donations go toward grocery credits for families. Families currently receiving SNAP benefits can go to a Buche Foods or Buche’s Gus Stop store and receive a $100 gift card.
- Why pivot from Holiday Meals?
- Hunger cannot wait for the holiday. The shutdown created an immediate crisis for families who depend on SNAP. We are temporarily redirecting Holiday Meals funds to meet this urgent need.
- What happens if the Federal Government opens back up and SNAP benefits are available again?
- All donations will go back to the Holiday Meal food giveaway.
- Will you make this initiative available in other counties and reservations as well?
- If we receive enough donations, we will open the program up to other locations. We have the opportunity to mobilize a Mobile Hunger Hero food pantry.
- Will you serve every family with SNAP eligibility in South Dakota?
- This program is first come, first serve. We will provide up to $250,000 total in gift cards. Each household with a SNAP card and valid identification can come to a Buche Foods or Buche’s Gus Stop to receive one $100 gift card. Team Buche Cares will consider expanding the program if additional donations are brought in.
- How are you preventing fraud from occurring?
- G.F. Buche Company has experience in donating certificates in a similar fashion and will work with local governing bodies to prevent fraud.
- Can I donate in another way?
